Parish church of St Gallus
Description
The parish church of St. Gallus in Wassen, ‘S'Chileli vo Wassen’, was rebuilt in 1734 and has characterised the landscape of the valley ever since. Since the opening of the Gotthard railway in 1882, it has been a well-known landmark and prominent point in the middle of the helical tunnels. Inside, the church impresses with its magnificent altars and ornate stucco work by Jost Ritz from Valais. The atmosphere is festive and imposing, while the pulpit may date from the previous Renaissance church. The church is an excellent stop on the Gottardo hiking trail along the historic railway line.
