Parish church Maria Himmelfahrt
Description
The Maria Himmelfahrt parish church, built between 1706 and 1711 to replace an earlier chapel, was only extended by the church tower 20 years later. The baroque façades are typical of the Ursern Valley style, associated with Bartholomäus Schmid, a renowned master builder. Inside, the church impresses with a stucco vault, a special pulpit that looks like marble and a baptismal font made of local soapstone. The high altar from 1720 comes from the workshop of Johann Ritz, while the side altars are of a simpler design. A picture in the choir shows an angel placing Hospental under the protection of saints, as well as the oldest known view of the village. The church can be ideally combined with the Hospental - Andermatt power place route or a tour of the village of Hospental.
