Historic village centre of Andermatt

Description

The Ursern Valley, characterised by the early settlement of the Grisons Oberland and Upper Valais, still has a distinct building culture compared to the rest of the canton. The well-preserved village centre of Andermatt, which is of national importance, is characterised by stately rococo houses. The traditional wooden houses on brick foundations, open arcades and stone staircases are also typical. The Gotthardstrasse, paved with natural stone and granite slabs in the centre, is reminiscent of the days of the legendary Gotthard stagecoaches.
