Suvorov Monument

Description

The Suvorov Monument commemorates the battles of 1799 between the Napoleonic troops under Lecourbe and the Russians under Suvorov. On 24 September 1799, Suvorov drove the French out of the St. Gotthard Hospice. To stop the Russian advance, the French blew up the Devil's Bridge in the Schöllenen Gorge the following day. Suvorov improvised a repair of the bridge with wooden beams and neckerchiefs of his officers to force the crossing, which was associated with great losses.

The memorial, erected by Russia in 1898 in honour of Suvorov and the fallen soldiers, is easily accessible from Andermatt and is located behind the Teufelsbrücke restaurant. It is freely accessible in summer and is ideal to visit in conjunction with a tour of the Schöllenen Gorge.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev visited the memorial on 22 September 2009 during his state visit to Switzerland.
