Devil's stone

Description

Legend has it that after failing several times to build a bridge over the Schöllenen Gorge, the locals asked the Devil for help. The Devil offered to solve the problem, but demanded the first soul to cross the bridge in return. The locals agreed. When the bridge was finished, they sent a billy goat across the bridge instead of a human. The Devil, furious at this deception, wanted to destroy the bridge with a rock. But a woman of faith carved a cross into the rock, causing the Devil to miss the bridge. The Devil's Stone, which is located near Göschenen, is still a reminder of this legend today. In 1973, the stone, which weighed over 200 tonnes, was moved 127 metres to make room for the construction of the motorway.
