Ursern Town Hall

Description

The Ursern town hall, first mentioned in 1459, was built in 1583 by Johannes Schmid and destroyed in a fire in 1766. It was rebuilt in 1767, with the ground floor formerly serving as the Sust (public rest and storage depot) for mule traffic and now houses the Ursern power station. The building, which was renovated in 1974 and supplemented by an arcade along the Gotthardstrasse, reflects the history of the valley. For over 600 years, the muleteers transported around 2600 tonnes of goods over the Gotthard Pass every year. Today, the town hall is the seat of the Ursern Corporation and the regional court. In the council chamber, the carved heraldic ceiling from 1931 shows the family coats of arms of the citizens of Ursern.
