Devil's Bridge
Description
The legend of the Devil's Bridge: The narrow rocky ledge above Göschenen has always been a major obstacle to accessing the Gotthard Pass. Building a bridge over the young Reuss in the Schöllenen Gorge proved to be extremely difficult. In desperation, the Landammann asked the Devil for help and he offered to build a bridge - on the condition that the first person to cross it would be his. When the bridge was completed after three days, the people of Uri sent a billy goat across the bridge instead of a human being. Enraged by this trick, the devil tried to destroy the bridge. But an old mother, who recognised the Devil, carved a cross into the stone that the Devil was about to throw. The stone landed in the valley, not far from Göschenen, and still lies there today as the ‘Devil's Stone’.
Schöllenen circular trail: The Schöllenen circular trail offers an eerie but fascinating view of the gorge. The approximately 30-minute trail is easy to walk and shows the impressive rock faces and the rushing Reuss. During the summer, the Teufelsbrücke restaurant invites you to experience the history of the Gotthard while enjoying food and drink. In the Devil's Bridge, multimedia technology stages various themes such as the Gotthard Post and the legend of the Devil in three unique rooms or portal windows.
