Gotthard Pass
2,091 m above sea level / Hospental - Airolo
Whether on the historic Tremola or the new pass road, discover the legendary Gotthard Pass, which connects Hospental in the Ursern Valley with Airolo in the canton of Ticino. The rise of the pass began in the 13th century, when the construction of the Devil's Bridge made it possible to cross the wild Schöllenen Gorge before Andermatt. After the mule track was continually extended, it quickly developed into one of the most important Alpine crossings. Even today, the Gotthard, together with its road and railway tunnel, is probably the most important north-south link for Switzerland and Europe.
Different cultures and language regions meet at the Gotthard Pass. Not only does the language change from German to Italian, the villages and the culinary offerings also exude Italianità.
The Gotthard massif forms the famous weather divide between north and south. Don't worry, if it rains on one side and you cross the pass, sunshine often awaits you on the other side. Take a walk at the top of the pass and immerse yourself in the mystical atmosphere of the bizarre rocky landscape with its small lakes. At the Gotthard Hospice at the top of the pass, you can turn off onto the historic pass road, the famous Tremola. The journey takes you along the cobbled road on the southern flank of the Gotthard Pass. The spectacular hairpin bends down to Airolo are considered the longest architectural monument in Switzerland.
