Klausen Pass

1,948 m above sea level / Altdorf - Linthal

Situated at 1,948 metres above sea level, the pass connects the cantons of Uri and Glarus. Through the beautiful Schächental valley, you reach Urnerboden, the largest Swiss alp with up to 1,200 cows and an alpine cheese dairy. The legendary Klausen races caused a furore far beyond Switzerland's borders in the 1920s and 1930s. Cars and motorbikes tackled the 21.5-kilometre route of the most difficult mountain race in Europe at the time on gravel tracks and at horrendous speeds.

Tip: Tell Museum

The village of Bürglen, situated at the entrance to the Schächental valley, is considered the home of William Tell. The Tell Museum in the village centre displays the largest collection of objects, depictions and documents about the famous Swiss hero of freedom.
