Oberalp Pass

2,046 m above sea level / Andermatt - Sedrun

The Oberalp Pass leads from Andermatt into the Grisons Oberland, known as the Surselva, as far as Disentis. The Oberalp is the easiest pass to cross, which is why Andermatt was first settled over it.

The gentle ascent from Andermatt to the pass summit at 2,046 metres above sea level offers magnificent views of the entire Ursern Valley and the Gemsstock. The Matterhorn Gotthard railway line also runs directly over the top of the pass. The ‘Glacier Express’ panoramic train reaches its highest point here on the journey from St. Moritz to Zermatt.

The turquoise-blue Oberalpsee lake at the top of the pass invites you to linger. Take a walk or a short hike.

The only and highest lighthouse in the Alps is located at the top of the pass. The replica symbolises the source of the Rhine, which rises nearby. The original is located at the mouth of the Rhine near Rotterdam.

On the Graubünden side, the road descends with a few more bends, past the small village of Tschamut and on via Sedrun to Disentis. Here you enter a new language region. Rhaeto-Romanic is spoken predominantly in the Surselva and there are also many culinary delights to discover.

Tip: Hike to the source of the Rhine

From the Oberalp Pass, a hike of around one and a half hours takes you to Lake Toma, the source of the Rhine at 2,345 metres above sea level. Alpine roses, meadow foamwort, gentian, marguerites and white cotton grass line the path and lake. The water in the lake is of drinking water quality.
