Susten Pass
2,224 m above sea level / Wassen - Innertkirchen
The Susten Pass connects the Reuss Valley in Uri with the Haslital in the Bernese Oberland. The spectacular Susten Pass road was only opened in 1945 and is the first pass road in the Alps to be designed specifically for motorised traffic.
Through the largely unspoilt and picturesque Meiental valley, you finally reach the top of the pass, which is crossed underneath by a crest tunnel. There is a large car park on the Bernese side of the tunnel and the Susten Hospiz a few metres above the pass road where you can take a break. During the descent, you have stunning views of the Gadmental valley and the Steingletscher glacier. Immerse yourself in a fascinating landscape ranging from lush alpine meadows to deep green, lush forests. The road leads down to the village of Gadmen with its beautiful old houses, sometimes with tight bends.
There are many exciting hikes along the route. For example, visit the Trift Bridge, one of the most spectacular pedestrian suspension bridges in the Alps. 100 metres high and 170 metres long, it hovers over the Trift Glacier area. Even the journey through the gorge by cable car is very adventurous. Climbers and boulderers also get their money's worth on the Susten Pass, with numerous routes and boulders providing variety and a sporting challenge.
Tip: Stone glacier
The Steinalp glacier trail, which takes you from the busy pass road to the high mountain world within a very short time and distance, reveals a lot of interesting facts about the inner and outer life of the five-kilometre-long ice flow in 15 stations and just under two hours.
