Melting cheese was already known in 1574, but it wasn't until 1874 that the cheese was officially named: Raclette. The word comes from the French dialect ‘racler’, which means ‘to scrape’. The name describes the gentle scraping or ‘scraping’ of the melted cheese - a ritual that makes every raclette a special treat.
